  LIFE’S COURSE

From youth I have been haunted by:
The dark background matter of sound
Shadows moving within syllables
In a universe of words stellularly hung;
The empty spaces between notes
Full of magic time that Mozart so young
Discovered, sensing the second longer
A form is held provoking awe
Or the golden hooves I heard
On Triana’s roofs echoing now
Forty four years ago, subtle differences
If we are wary.  In the tropics
The end of summer means new life
Dawn is a chorus, as nest building is done
Rain soon falling to bring the leaves
To the purple flowering trees, as we learn
From the Lord who loves beauty
Variety in every flower, the song of each bird
Let us learn to listen to that inner voice
Charting our unique course.
