The fall of ancient civilizations fascinated
Sophocles, as he sat at the ruined Mycenae gates
pen in hand, examples from the past haunt
our future, the passing of the aged heroes
if we listen, a chorus of Theban or Colonus Elders
warn of repeated errors, whose nature brings
on decay and downfall’s finality
pivotal weaknesses and faults of cause, if uncorrected
do not change with time, new moralities are old
proven ingredients of tragic consequences and endings.
