Can smell be thought, odor or aroma
remembered: the cutting of hay frees
natural oils of life into long days of summer
as the plant resigns to death, synthesis
of light chemical energy converted, goes out
releasing a damp molecular fragrance
of decomposing chlorophylls into extended eveningís
perfume, intensely green pigments, complex
molecules of nitrogen, magnesium and oxygen
absorbers of photons, freeing electrons
into anti-bonding orbits, excited states
transferred along the chain, reducing carbon dioxide
incorporating carbohydrates. When cut
the source of seasonís scent lies
in dying heaps of compost mulch or animal feed.
