The cathedral gargoyle, stone
symbolic guardian, peers beneath
into lower darkness of night
that contains the embryo of dawn
the meeting floor, moving shutter
of earth, tile and block, place of
philosophical gathering, plaza
of civic assembly, the symbolís
fixed stare, grotesque benign
carved by the artist, his cutting tools
shaping, grooving from outline
to capture mythical and magical
convention, guards a mystery
as absent obscurity moves below
before this metaphor, slowly filling
with light, forms become visible
the day takes shape, enlightened
in associative linked connections.
