 SPACES

Tunnels connect La Habana
From East and from the West
Under water channels, echoing
The night’s silence, need to speak
Not an island but a jut of land
Between movement of tides
Arteries allowing free circulation
Life blood, as when I was young
Running with wings of wind
At my back, then alienated in love
To preserve their mother
Martyr for motherhood
Her instinctual fixations drove her
To life’s horizon, I jerked her back
Saved for her children, equanimity
My sacrifice, in paradise, now
My steps are heavier, a tout breeze
A barrier, cavernous courses
Reverberating, as the moon
Delivers her lovers, hushed
Hearts, spaces of words
To speak, depths to reach.
